--- Comment #1 from Ped7g kukadlo@pobox.sk --- I had this issue on linux in 1.7.49, which is supposed to be fixed... and is. But you need to configure wine to "Windows 95" (I was trying WinXP first).
Before I figured this out, I tried something else, I did limit the available cpu for wine (cpulimit -l 50 -e wine-preloader), and this one fixed menus for me too. So maybe there's some way for OS X too? But the gameplay then got quite choppy, so it was not like complete solution, I had to run/exit the cpulimit when I did need menus. BTW, moving mouse didn't help that much for me, took me a minute or so to bring down whole main menu.
Hopefully this may help other confused linux users...
