I did not have FreeSerif 14, so I used Liberation Sans 14. The changes persisted after closing Dragon bar and Notepad. I reran Notepad and Dragon NaturallySpeaking a few times. All looks nice and smooth.
Thanks for the suggestion of using fontfix. Notepads default font looks rather jagged.
Perhaps you are running Notepad from within a different WINEPREFIX than Dragon Natually Speaking. This can happen if Dragon Natually Speaking was installed into a different WINEPREFIX than the default .wine. The winetricks script is aware of other prefixes, you just have to make sure WINEPREFIX environment variable is set before using winetricks to apply changes under that new prefix...
