so, we're finally moving forward

After overriding quartz to native (by putting it in syswow64 - I just *love*
that 'load by GUID' scheme), number of threads still goes into 150+, which I
strongly suspect isn't proper behavior, but it doesn't seem to freeze anymore.

That quite a few commits between early November and end of January, but at
least now I've got a decent target.
