Please try force-installing the i386 openssl package from your distributor. I don't know anything about the 64 bit debian wine package, but I do know that in the past, force-installing the 32 bit openssl package helped similar problems.

I am just asking to correct the package, and compile it with ssl support, so no other debian etch guy with amd64 arch will loose hours checking why in picasa or other application you cannot log in. I solved the problem by installing i386 wine but why? just compile amd64 version with ssl.
