Confirmed that initial problem was due to:

wine: Call from 0x7ee0d7d0 to unimplemented function
atl.dll.AtlModuleRegisterWndClassInfoA, aborting

Current workaround is to use real Microsoft atl.dll.

This bug is present in wine 1.0.1-1 and 1.1 36
