The player is invisible in Soldat since Wine 1.7.42 and the bug is still present in Wine 1.9.0.

Reverting solves the issue.
You might encounter another bug when trying to run Soldat with an old Wine version. If Alt+Tab doesn't help, try switching to TTY and back. This problem seems to be fixed in Wine 1.9.0.
Mind you, the next version of Soldat (1.7.0) replaces the old DX8 renderer with OpenGL, which renders correctly.
