I tested the game (from gog.com "STAR WARS®: TIE FIGHTER (1998)") on 
- wine-1.9.23
- Ubuntu 16.04
- Nvidia 367.57-0ubuntu0.16.04.1
- 32bit wine prefix
- Logitech F710 gamepad

...and to me this issue seems to have been fixed. I could not get to crash
while entering the "Escape menu" during gameplay.

Recorded a short video of the gameplay. Seems like the mouse cursor is missing
this time, but I´ll take a look to it and make a new issue about it....
