I still have to find out how to set my Desktop to 16 bit colour depth (startx requires me to use root, and even if I "su" back to my normal user in that session things don't work, wine says it can't find a display).
Try the workarounds in http://wiki.winehq.org/256ColorMode (adapted to use 16bpp, of course).
