The message "No Direct3D, Switching to software rasterizer" mentioned above reminded me of bug 23263. I don't know whether the cause of was the same (maybe someone can test with an Wine 1.2rc3 or earlier), but the DirectX 6.1 SDK samples do run under Wine 1.2rc5 without showing that message box.
However most of them seem to have some rendering issues, e.g. all polygons black. They would probably be a good test suite for improving Wine's DirectX support.
