I finally got around to trying this again.  Just installed wine 1.3.29, tried
PGII again, and had same behavior as before: blank black map screen.  After
copying the MAP directory off the CD and into the drive_c/panzer2 directory,
the game works as expected.

Apparently, either the files are not being copied over like they should, or the
game is not finding the files on the CD...
