I suffered this problem with Wine 1.1.7 (from the Ubuntu Intrepid repositories;
exact version 1.1.7~winehq0~ubuntu~8.10-0ubuntu1) and found that using
-nostartup to disable the intro movies seems to fix it, at least for me
(vanilla AOE and AOC install with a no-cd crack).
Now just to sort out the black screen on starting a game...
