The low limit is a good idea, but some logs can span two or three compressed
volumes and with certain kinds of bugs you can't be certain that the first or
last 100,000 lines (for example) are any use: the only thing to do is to check
a full log.

If it hits four split volumes I usually give up anyway - the log is simply
labelled "too big".
