With Wine (Staging or not) 1.9.23, the error dialog will not appear but the Doom process will hang and eat 100% of one CPU core until it is manually killed.
This error might be relevant (in Wine Staging): fixme:secur32:schannel_get_mac_algid unknown algorithm 200
or in Wine Devel: fixme:win:RegisterDeviceNotificationW (hwnd=0x200ae, filter=0x33f63c,flags=0x00000000) returns a fake device notification handle!
