This might be a duplicate of bug 15789, a major performance regression in
ddraw.

You can check by testing the revisions e178ddd~1 and e178ddd. If it works with
the first version and fails with the second, this is a duplicate.

The developer who caused that regression told me he's not working on it because
there isn't a download. So maybe, if these bugs connect, things can move
forward.
