I found a workaround for this problem, and probably the real source if it. It seems the free intel and ati drivers do not support hardware S3 texture compression (S3TC) but there is a software fallback. Simply use the tool driconf to force S3TC to be enabled and the game will have textures. Works for my ati X850XT and my intel 4500MHD (both with free drivers and wine 1.1.37)
Sounds like this is the issue, which makes the bug report invalid due to lack of driver support/system configuration issue.
