No, launching application from its directory does not improve the situation 
much - but in my one and only trial, I did have to launch 4 help windows, close
4,
then do it again to get wine to get stuck.

BTW, the release cycle of R is every 6 months, so 2.6.2 is current. (compared
to 2.5.0 when I filed the earlier bug). 2.7.x is expected within the next
month.
