There's one single thing that you can try out on the Wine side, namely disable the handle_underrun hack in dlls/winealsa.drv/mmdevdrv.c: static int handle_underrun = 0; (or disable it as indicated at the bottom of comment #32). With that disabled, Wine can claim that it's useage of ALSA is extremely basic and should not cause bugs to appear elsewhere.

You should rarely feel the need to reboot a UNIX. Logging out and in should be enough -- and it's a shame already.
