I won't be making any promises regarding the driver. I still have the code lying around, but it's far from finished.
There's not much I can say about whether it is a good or bad decision to include PA support. But I personally think that software mixing is very important; I'm a laptop user and casual gamer. Last time I tried, PA's ALSA emulation wasn't working in Wine either. (But that was a while ago, and I should try again with 0.9.7.) (Also, OSS emulation worked fine, just with some crackling in the sound.)
Assuming that PA is going to polish it's ALSA emulation, it *might* be a good decision to only support the ALSA API in Wine. But ALSA emulation is also another layer inbetween, and I can't tell how that influences latency, which also seems to be important to many.
