Does 'winetricks dsoundbug9612' help, when using the built-in dsound.dll? That worked around a similar crash in Hearts of Iron III demo here.
A similar problem has been reported in bug #19979.

...thanks for the pointer -- it doesn't actually resolve the issue at all, but it *doea* have the effect of letting the debug trace spool out without detaching, with dsound set to builtin, which is likely close enough to what Austin asked for ... I'll attach that in the next few minutes -- thanks again
