I think the reason is some kind of speed dial or most popular websites which appears to the opened tab. When you change the page opening when you select new tab to google.com or something, it stops crashing.
We can't change website befor crashing, because it is the comman new tab who make crashing safari
I changed the homepage back to crashing "Top sites" and tried to figure out how to solve it. The solution was to make an empty .html file to your desktop. Then open it with Safari which should be found in the program list. When you do that, Safari ignores the homepage and doesn't crash at the beginning. Then you have time to change homepage.
Hopefully my explanation wasn't so bad. That should be worth trying...
