My machine : Windows XP / Linux Ubuntu 11.04 dual boot, both updated regularly, desktop, stand-alone, sole user. I have installed Wine through method described in ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1524397 (sudo apt-get install wine) which automatically fetched Wine ver 1.2.2. In the meantime I had downloaded e-Sword's setup983.exe, setup991.exe and niv.exe. I then installed setup983.exe on wine after which I could run e-Sword successfully, but after I installed niv.exe on e-Sword (which you must do) e-Sword failed and gave the above error. (niv.exe is the NIV Bible which runs on e-Sword). This pattern followed on each consecutive installation. I then uninstalled e-Sword from Wine and deleted all remaining e-Sword files.
I then installed setup991.exe with the same procedure and the same result.
Then I tried to install e-Sword with method described on ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=404042 and with both versions of e-Sword but again with the same result.
Then I did a clean uninstall of Wine 1.2 and installed Wine 1.3 from Synaptic. Installation of e-Sword with the same procedure described above gave the same result.
ON WINDOWS XP I HAD NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.
