Is this still an issue in recent (1.4-rc4 or later) wine?
Probably not but there may be others. Back in November I looked at some of the more recent development versions of Wine & that area of the code had been totally changed.
The problem was an interaction between hardware, application and code which made unwarranted assumptions about both. I've changed H/W although the new laptop has similar graphics & drivers to the old. Although neither the original problem nor the black icons recurred although there was a new one in that some control backgrounds were black instead of white.
However at that time I also upgraded to a more recent version of the application. I experimented a little with different combinations of more recent versions of Wine (& the then current Crossover Office) & the two versions of the application but every change seemed to solve one problem & introduce another. Eventually I went back to using 1.2.3 with my workaround as it works.
