On IRC it was suggested that I produce a WINEDEBUG=file log so here it is.
I should add that HL2 does *not* exit right away but first hangs at a level loading progress of 100% for about a minute. During this time, wine wrote a *lot* of lines like "trace:file:WriteFile 0x320 (nil) 0 0x20e3e8a0 (nil)" (following the initial "bad file descriptor" thing.
The last thing HL2 touched before the problem, according to the log, seems to be the attached file GameOverlayRenderer.log
