[Bug 11734] App creates popups but fails to write expected text

Testing has produced a possible exception to the "empty popup" problem.  In
graph format, at the lower left corner of the main window is the word "goto". 
Clicking on or near the word produces a popup (a date selection tool).  The
obvious questions are: is this of the class "popup" and if so, why does it work
properly?
