What's perhaps noteworthy is that an Ubuntu Lucid laptop with Intel 915 onboard graphics crashes within wined3d_device_init_3d too. However here, the crash occurs only with ORM=backbuffer, while ORM=fbo allows the app to start and slowly proceed to the main menu (the Intel HW is way too slow for this app).
