Somewhere along the line (perhaps with Path of Exile 2.0), Grinding Gear Games changed the way the game renders text, allowing them to use kerning correctly but also (as a happy side-effect) fixing text-rendering in Wine.
So this bug may be difficult-or-impossible to reproduce now.

I can say for sure (installed it a few minutes ago) that on WINE 1.8 I do NOT see any artifacting on the text.
That being said though I did install the typical font files you would expect to install. In the past the workaround for POE was to install Tahoma fonts to make the text look better. So that is just habit for me to install now. I also install the Corefonts which is just a bunch of default fonts that many programs take advantage of anyway.
Though I don't see why you couldn't just press the "allfonts" option in winetricks. I mean its fonts. not really a highly volatile thing there.
