I believe I have this demo, at least the filename is the same. It looks like I need the full version with updates to use the game's d3d renderer.
Yeah, the D3D version was an experimental patch for the full game. Not sure if it can be applied to the GoG version (which doesn't come with the patch which was a little surprising).
