It is getting more tightly integrated into most popular distros with every release.
On suse I've already had a native linux app (mumble) crashing on me when I turned off pulse audio (yes i did configure it again for alsa in stead of pulse). This is very annoying since now i have to choose between playing eve with sound and no mumble and eve with no sound and being able to communicate with my fleet/corp during opps.
So I personally consider simply de-installing/disabling pulse a solution with a lot of negative side effects which I prefer to avoid.
