Does this help? http://source.winehq.org/patches/data/104725 I can't currently test it, that's why I'm asking.
I've tried this patch with wine 1.6.2 (applies cleanly) and 1.7.27 (does not apply at all, as about half of the changes are already in, but I manually applied the rest) and it doesn't seem to improve the situation.
Worse - the new patcher (updated yesterday) crashes immediately after displaying the download screen - so the game has basically became unplayable.
