I suspect it may be hardware/driver related. I'm using a laptop with a usb-c
external monitor plugged into a usb-c hub.

To get it to work on debian, I had to install the displaylink driver from
Synaptics
(https://www.synaptics.com/products/displaylink-graphics/downloads/ubuntu).
