I figured out that I can get exactly the same options screen in the real
desktop. Still grey and black in a virtual desktop which I normally use with
WoW.

Good:
WINEPREFIX=... wine Launcher.exe

Bad:
WINEPREFIX=... wine explorer "/desktop=WoW,800x600" Launcher.exe

With default logging I see no message in console in either case.
