This is likely a copy-protection issue (Starforce). The retail version of
KB:Legend comes with Securom or Starforce (depending on the region). 
You can receive the same two error messages if you try to start the demo of
KB:Armored Princess, the sequel to KB:Legend. It has also Starforce.

However, the demo of KB:Legend has no protection, thus it can be started as
mentioned in c#5.
