I took a look at commit 4936e71828669ef084f9cf243f924a11a2cdce50 and stepped through the changes to find the one piece that causes the fog problem in SC2. A hack to revert the relevant piece is attached here.
Erich's patch seems to have fixed the problem for me. In case any other Ubuntu users want to try it, I've published a patched version of wine 1.3.29 in my PPA, here: https://launchpad.net/~foresto/+archive/winepatched/
Forest, I'd like to confirm that your custom version of wine worked great. I also took the diff and source from your ppa and compiled my own wine so I could use a custom refresh rate, and that worked too.
