But I can confirm this is somehow related to the kernel version. Currently using Gentoo sources 2.6.24-r8 and it works in 1 of 3 cases.
I had a much slower system (P3-866, now P4-3.2HT) with older kernel before and Far Cry never started (or at most in 1 of 50 cases or so). But it worked way back on the 2.6.22 kernel series.
