After having thrown in another Gig of ram and setting the heapsize to 512000(!) it seems to have solved the impossible studder/hitching. It's a classic Source engine 'issue' but it's a new one for me.
As far as the 'fixme:d3d:state_blendop Unrecognized/Unhandled D3DBLENDOP value 0' errors it occurs at the Main menu and doesn't seem to hurt preformance/rendering any. Having looked into it, it's referring to /dlls/wined3d/state.c and the alpha channel. What this unrecognized blendop mode is , is beyond my knowledge.
