avoid deadlock when destroying a thread (on multi-threaded machines)

because the original site is down and to make life easier for everyone, i have
decided to upload this patch here so my script can download it using wget and
everyone's happy. 
Sorry if this is the wrong place, but I can't find any other place to put it
in.
