I installed the two-file version from http://us.runesofmagic.com/us/downloads,client,us.html i.e. http://frogster.vo.llnwd.net/o9/FOG/rom/Runes_of_Magic_3.0.1.2153_two.exe/Ru... http://frogster.vo.llnwd.net/o9/FOG/rom/Runes_of_Magic_3.0.1.2153_two.exe/Ru... It installed fine. Starting the game runs its autoupdater, and that crashes, probably when it finishes applying a patch. The console shows fixme:shdocvw:OleObject_Close (0x12b020)->(1) fixme:mshtml:HlinkTarget_SetBrowseContext (0x18d498)->((nil)) wine: Unhandled illegal instruction at address 0x5e0da0 (thread 0022), starting debugger...
Doing wineserver -k and restarting the game works around the problem, but you have to do it after each patch, and there are dozens. winetricks ie6 works around the problem in a more satisfying way.
