Winetricks does nothing special, it just downloads and runs the installer.

I would like to confirm that
  rm -rf ~/.wine
  wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks
  sh winetricks vcrun2005
works for you.  If it doesn't something is seriously wrong.
