My effort to test the demo was futile as it seems to contain Starforce.
The digital distribution version of the game from GoG.com (contains no DRM at
all) worked perfectly for me, without the reported issues, in (a clean)
Wine-1.1.43. I had no visual glitches neither in the menus, nor in the main
game.
...and had no obscure crashes as reported in comment #18.
