Without it the mentioned dialogue comes up letting you press either Retry or Cancel. Pressing Retry always generates an exception that clearly shows some unimplemented functions in the built-in d3dx9_36.dll. If the missing native dll caused the problem to the bug reporter, I don't quite understand how he could get into the game at all?
Anyway, after placing d3dx9_36.dll into the game's directory the game started up correctly and was very stable for me both in fullscreen and virtual desktop mode. No other changes were made in wine's configuration.
