[Bug 14789] Fix signal handler

I agree that there are other issues with higher importance. Nevertheless, I
would appreciate implementations for signal handlers that are always
asynchronous signal safe.
The current approaches are not guaranteed to work because they depend on
potentially undefined behaviour.
