I installed Steam through Play on Linux, what was needed after installing Fallout 3 was copying the "msasn1.dll" file referenced in the instructions and (I think) removing the DotNetFX dir from the "Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/common/Fallout 3" folder, after that it's been running fine for several hours now.
