Patch to revert commit a0053ab9aa526ab2141e4655f97f796e386b

I reverted the commit a0053ab9aa526ab2141e4655f97f796e386bbdf0 and fixed the
conflicts (almost nothing). That's probably not the best option (this commit
probably had some use) but that resolves the regression.

It was made on top of commit fe9d36005fb7450177719f826ebabb895c71a5f6
