After false starts using the install procedure documented elsewhere, I used the procedure for Office 2007 Installer from the AppDB. The install completed, but user-specific setup did not complete, ultimately ending in a truncated error message regarding Building Blocks.dotx.
I completely uninstalled Wine, and re-installed the 32-bit version.
The Office install completed (mine was stripped down to Word only, and no .Net support), and on running Word I have reached the software activation screen. (There it's failing Internet activation; I may simply activate by phone and skip the troubleshooting steps...)
So, if you don't have a need for 64-bit Windows apps, I'd suggest trying the 32-bit approach.
