Before abandoning this bug, can I once again mention that this bug has been improperly described? Yes, this game does not work "out of the box" for some people when installed. Yes, this game generates D3D error messages. But no, these two items are not linked.
When installing from a CD, the "MAP" directory is not getting copied over appropriately. If you manually copy the MAP directory, the problem goes away, and the game plays as normal.
Whoops, sorry, I missed comment #13. Still, I believe that the original bug and the one mentioned in that comment are likely due to different causes...
I'll be quiet now. :)
