Well, this happened to me, when i used all the d3dx9_{24..42}.dll.
If you did that, don't do that :) Use just two following native:
* d3dx9_36.dll --otherwise game will not run
* d3dx9_30.dll --to get rid of red shadows, i.e. "cosmetic"
...and HUD will be OK again.
