Problem solved for me since last TF2 update.
I think Clement is right
~/wine-git37/wine --version wine-1.1.37-138-g8894da4 ~/wine-git37/wine steam.exe -applaunch 440 no problem here with 1600x1200 or smaller but I only check (4:3), not 16:9
