OK, I think I found the problem.

I first tried with the git version, it worked well.

Then I tried typing "/usr/bin/wine NWC32.EXE" (therefore using the installed
0.9.44) and it worked.

So it looks like a small problem in either the kernel's binfmt handling or
Ubuntu's binfmt registering.

Anyway it's not a Wine problem.
