possible fixes

Fwiw I'm not seeing problems with GNOME, and I won't be able to try other WMs
for the moment.

Do the attached patches help? If yes I'd be interested which one, as I suspect
all the changes may not be necessary (they make things a bit more consistent
but I should probably try to stop breaking this code).
