I've had the same problem, until I realized that I did a clean install and that
opensuse enables pulse audio by default.

Switching off pulse-audio and reverting back to good old alsa did the trick for
me.

On suse this is done by issuing the command:
setup-pulseaudio --disable

Could it be that ubuntu has been so kind to 'improve' your linux experience by
enabling pulse audio ?
